AutoCAD or Revit ??
Architects have benefitted immensely due to
rapidly advancing technology. The reason? The development of pre-construction
software, such as AutoCAD and Revit. These software move the burden of creating
endless sheets of construction documents manually to a digital platform, by
creating a digital file. This saves time, and modifications mentioned by
customers can be incorporated into the file effortlessly.
Both AutoCAD and Revit, developed by Autodesk, keep upgrading,
as a new and improved version of the software is released every year. Each
year, new tools and advanced features are introduced to enhance the final
output desired by the architect. Architects today prefer Revit, as it is a
software developed specifically for BIM (Building Information Modelling). Revit
includes all tools required to implement the BIM process. This being the major
advantage with Revit, architects prefer showcasing their work with the output
derived by Revit, rather than using AutoCAD.
Despite
Revit gaining importance, with large construction firms adopting the process of
BIM for their construction projects, small and mid-sized construction firms
still use AutoCAD. This is because of the following:
License Cost
Some mid-sized firms are not able to afford
the license cost of Revit. Thus, they are comfortable working with
AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT, as the output derived provides enough information and the
cost of using AutoCAD is less than half of Revit. Hence, Autodesk-certified
training centres provide AutoCAD courses for those individuals who are just
starting out in this domain and are looking to gain some experience in such
mid-sized firms before moving on to Revit.
Hardware Support
Small
and medium-sized construction firms may not have hardware systems that support
Revit. AutoCAD, on the other hand, is compatible with basic hardware systems.
Labour Cost
The
cost associated with hiring a draftsman is significantly less than that of a
Revit modeller. Firms require training in Revit to upgrade their employees'
skills. The training cost is thus eliminated, as small and mid-sized firms make
do with employees working with AutoCAD.
Saving Old AutoCAD Version Files Is Easy
AutoCAD
enables the saving of files in older versions, thereby eliminating the
necessity of buying a license for the latest version. However, saving Revit
files requires a license for the latest version.
Transition Phase
In
India, few firms have completely adopted Revit for their projects. However,
most of the firms are still in the transition phase and are training their
employees to use Revit.
Autodesk-certified
training centres still provide AutoCAD training courses for the above-mentioned
reasons. However, there are a few more reasons why CAD/BIM training centres
provide an Autodesk-certified AutoCAD course to students and professionals.
Base Software for Beginners
For
architects who want to move from manual drafting to computer-aided design,
AutoCAD makes this transition easy. They can create different views, angles and
perspectives in the same manner as they had done with manual drafting. Being
well acquainted with using AutoCAD makes moving on to Revit easier, as
technical drawings are then better understood.
Stepping Stone for Learning Revit
Learning
AutoCAD is easy, as it deals with the creation of basic tools, such as lines,
circles, rectangles, polygons, etc. Revit involves the use of detailed tools,
such as walls, roofs and floors, that require the knowledge of the basic
concepts learnt in AutoCAD.
Working on One Drawing at One Time
Plans,
sections, elevations and detailed drawings are created separately in AutoCAD.
In Revit, however, while creating the plan drawing, section, elevation and
detailed drawings are created simultaneously. Although this feature is
advantageous, modellers have to think about all the facets of a building
simultaneously in Revit, rather than focus on one drawing at a time in AutoCAD.
As a beginner, learning one aspect of a design in AutoCAD is easier than
focusing on multiple aspects of a design in Revit.
Autodesk-certified
training centres continue to offer AutoCAD training courses in Mumbai, as this
course has proven vital for students who wish to change their career path. Some
firms still use AutoCAD, as some customers still haven't implemented the
process of BIM or may not be able to afford to create Revit models. Thus,
AutoCAD may not provide as many benefits as Revit in terms of output, but it is
preferable to master this software before learning Revit.
